Velvet's Guardian

Velvet and other Beacon initiates soared through the air having just been launched off Beacon cliffs from what can only be described as a spring loaded launch pads. The wind blew through her hair and her tall ears, sending a shiver down her spine.

Below her was the Emerald Forrest, a majestic sea of green tree canopies for as far as the eye could see.

Even though the rush of the air filled her ears Velvet's super sensitive hearing picked up the sound of someone falling next to her. She quickly glanced in the direction of the noise. "Huh?" she said out loud, looking around.

"Oh come on! Heeeeeeeelp mee...eeee...eeee!!!" The voice she had picked up cried out to her left. Glancing over quickly, she saw a falling blonde boy cartwheeling end over end as he fell through space.

He looked terrified and quite green in the face, like he was about to throw up

She winced pityingly but had to focus as she needed to deploy her landing strategy.
An explosive sound to her far right caused her slight alarm for a second until a red and gold spear passed underneath her and disappeared with the poor falling boy into the canopy.

It was time to activate her landing strategy. As Velvet broke thought the leafy canopy, a large branch appeared underneath her. Thinking quickly Velvet positioned herself and landed on the branch, she quickly and without hesitation turned and jumped to another branch, losing momentum without hurting herself.

Leaping down to the ground, she collected herself.

"Well that was fun Now to find the forest temple" she said to no one in particular.

The Emerald Forest was strangely silent as Velvet made her way north towards the direction of the temple. Now and again she would hear far off battle noises, gunshots and yells.

Velvet did want to help and find team mates however due to her being a Faunus she had experienced a lot of teasing and discrimination in the past. This was the reason velvet was scared of judgement and exceptionally shy.
A loud breaking sound close by behind her made her jump. She was suddenly on high alert.

Looking around for the cause of the noise she called out.

"H-hello?" Silence. "Is anyone there?" Still silence.

Taking her battle stance she close her eyes and used her super sensitive hearing, listening for something, anything. Her ears picked up a mass of movement behind her. By the sound of the vibrations it was something big and about to attack.

Taking a deep breath, she focused and turned to face the danger. A huge boarbatusk major snorted and charged out of the bushes but Velvet was ready.

Velvet smashed her scepter into the ground as hard as she could and the earth around Velvet shuddered and rippled as a localized seismic wave radiated toward the charging Grimm. The boarbatusk made a noise of exclamation as it was picked up and hurled into a tree by the wave; But it had only been suprised, it shook itself and prepared to charge again.

Velvet could have easily out run the Grimm but she had seen first hand what a boarbatusk could do to an enemy when they found them.

The boarbatusk and velvet circled eachother slowly waiting for the first move.

Velvet deployed the secondary function on her weapon, retractable scythe blades, a septre-scythe. Twirling it around she was ready.

The boarbatusk squealed and charged, making the first move.Waiting until the last possible second, Velvet hopped out of harm's way, slashing at the boarbatusk's flank for good measure.

Velvet decided it was time to use her semblance, her dust decoy.

Velvet started to run. Her natural running ability meant that she was a blur to anyone without the keenest eyesight.

Whispering incantations under her breath she conjured a mirror image, an illusion of herself that acted as a decoy and a distraction.

The boarbatusk blundered around, confused and aggravated by this display, trying to sense where the real prey was.

Velvet moved away while the boarbatusk was distracted by the copy of its adversary.

Seeing a low hanging branch, big but damaged already on a nearby tree she murmured another incantation and felt an invisible rope form from each of her hands meeting and fusing together on the opposite side of the branch.

She slowly walked backwards to the tree trunk all the while straining the heavy branch.
Digging her boots into the ground she pulled the branch back further then most humans could pull it due to her unnatural strength and powerful legs until the branch was bent almost double and under exceptional strain.

Shaking and sweating from holding the branch, Velvet was ready for the beast.
She broke the connection to her decoy. The decoy they lasted for a few more seconds before dispersing back into dust.

The boarbatusk spotted her and began to paw the ground. She was going to have to time this right. If velvet made and error or false move, she'd be crushed against the tree by the Grimm.

With a squeal the boarbatusk charged bee-lining straight at Velvet, it's hooves thundering on the forrest floor.

The Grimm was 20 feet out and closing fast.

5....

With all her strength Velvet severed her ropes and pushed as hard as she could against the tree branch.

The result was spectacular. The branch, bent double, released of all it's tension flung up with enormous whiplash force, the very tip of the branch hitting the Grimm dead centre on its unprotected belly.

The Grimm was flung backwards hard and fast, as the branch made a noise like a whip cracking.

The boarbatusk smashed into a tree clearly stunned. However the grimm's surprise quickly turned into anger.

The boarbatusk, furious now began to paw the ground, getting ready to charge yet again.

With a chilling enraged squeal the boarbatusk started charging.

As Velvet prepared to evade it, a tree root torn up by the release of the branch caught around her foot and tripped her up.

Velvet fell awkwardly on her ankle and gasped in pain. She couldn't stand. Professor Ozpin was not joking when he said that the initiation was a high risk activity and the outlook for Velvet was dire.

Time slowed right down for velvet as she saw the monster thundering towards her, it's glinting white tusks tapered to deadly points.

Boarbatusk's were known to crush their victims, sometimes beyond recognition.

It was 30 feet away and closing fast, as velvet prepared to meet her end.

25...

20...

15....

10...

Velvet closed her eyes accepting her fate and hoping it was painless.

Suddenly, at the last possible second, Velvet heard something or someone blindside the charging Grimm.

The boarbatusk lost it's footing and skidded uncontrollably into a tree with such force it was knocked unconscious.

Velvet slowly opened her eyes and looked at the individual who had quite literally saved her life.

A tall figure stood In front of her, blocking the sun.

It crouched down near her.

"Are you ok?" a male voice asked concernedly.

As her eyes adapted to the sunlight she saw concerned emerald green eyes looked back at her.

"Y-Yeah I'm fine" she stammered, confused and shaken, as she tried to stand pain shot from her hurt ankle.

Velvet fell back to the ground and cradled her injured ankle.

"You're not fine, you're hurt!", the stranger said worried, "do you mind if I have a look?"

Velvet, after a moment of hesitation, shook her head and loosened the boot on the injured foot.

The stranger examined her ankle "It's just a bit of bruising, you should be okay" The stranger said sounding relieved, "Here let me help you up".

The stranger extended his hand to Velvet. Velvet accepted the help, grabbing his hand and wincing as she was helped back onto her feet.

She finally got a good look at the stranger who had saved her life it was now she discovered he was a Faunus.

He was tall, between 5'11 and 6'1, toned, bald with emerald green eyes.

Velvet knew he was a Faunus because roughly in the area of his temples, two long black horns came out to the level of his forehead then curved upwards and outwards.

'A bull Faunus!?' she thought startled

Bull Faunus were a very rare type of Faunus and they were known for their fighting prowess and unmatched raw strength.

During the Faunus war many groups of bull Faunus decided to fall in battle rather than be subjugated by humans. Many of them fought against humans and were killed, the effects of the war almost brought the bull Faunus to the brink of extinction.

The bull Faunas was wearing a bright orange singlet and long blue pants and a black back brace with shoulder straps. In the middle of the back brace there was a crimson clasp with a black insignia on it made up of a circle with a concave line on top of it.

On his feet there were combat boots, a mix of orange red and black, with exceptionally thick soles designed for suspension and support. His insignia was also on his boots in  reversed colors.

A squeal behind the pair made them jump, the boarbatusk was regaining consciousness. It had been down for so long that they had both forgotten about it, but now it was alert... and angry.

The red orange eyes burned with raw fury and hatred as the Grimm pawed the ground. A charge was imminent.

Velvet and the Faunus prepared themselves, velvet was surprised when the faunus brought out his weapon, a two sided heavy maul, as she couldn't see the secondary function of the weapon.

Velvet used her decoy semblance to distract the Grimm again creating a series of ghostly yet solid lifelike images of her, confusing the Grimm, and went on the offensive using her disorientating spells, sound waves and concussive blasts.

All pain in her foot was forgotten about as her focus shifted and adrenaline flooded her system.

The bull Faunus meanwhile had been waiting for an opening to attack this monster. He knew that boarbatusk's were completely protected from the top due to their armor, and a side attack would do little more then wound it. It had to be an attack from below to be a critical and deadly hit.

The bull Faunus suddenly started to run, moving into the grimm's range, both it and Velvet turned startled by what it saw, as the bull Faunus swung his maul low using all the super strength he had and hit the unprotected sternum of the Grimm.

As the maul made contact with the Grimm's sternum, a pressure sensitive plate initiated the firing mechanism a half second later.

The maul hit with the force of a rocket, propelling them both skywards
Both the bull Faunus and the Grimm were launched into the air as a stunned Velvet lost sight of them.

Blasted high above the canopy the bull Faunus got ready to finish off the Grimm.

As gravity got its hold on the Grimm, the bull Faunus being slightly lighter, used this advantage to place the spiked point on the top of the maul squarely on the belly of the Grimm and pressed a button on the side of his maul, the spike doubled in size pressing into the grimm's chest.

Pressing another button the maul exploded from the bottom, tripling the speed at which they were falling.

The bull Faunus shut his eyes and hoped that it would turn out well for him as the boarbatusk gave a final chilling shriek...

1...

WHAMMMMMMMMMM!

A huge impact on the ground caused a minor shockwave as leaves were torn off trees and plants within a 10 foot radius were obliterated.

A huge plume of dust erupted and began to slowly settle.

Velvet standing a few feet away, staggered against the force of the impact.

When the dust settled the bull Faunus was standing on top of the body of the defeated boarbatusk victorious, but Velvet felt something was wrong. He was swaying and looked like he was going to faint.

Velvet dashed forward to catch him as his strength failed and he lost conciousness, managing to catch him before his head smashed into the ground.

Velvet laid him down and checked to see that he had a pulse and he was breathing softly but easily. Satisfied, she carefully went over to check on the boarbatusk.

It was dead, the maul spike had skewered the Grimm to the ground and a shadowy substance had started to emanate from the body and disperse in the wind.

She breathed a sigh of relief and went back to the Faunus.

Velvet sat over the faunus, protecting him and stretching out her injured ankle,it was tender and over extended but it would be ok, she sighed with relief as this fact dawned on her. It was half an hour before the Faunus stirred, and woke with a start.

"Wher-Where am I?" he gasped

"You're in the Emerald Forest" Velvet responded softly and calmly.

"Ah okay, and the boarbatusk?"

"Dead", Velvet said looking over at the body. "You saved my life" Velvet muttered.
"You-you're welcome, well I wasn't just going to leave you, was I? That thing was huge!"

"Thank you," Velvet said and strangely out of character leant over and placed a kiss on the bull Faunus forehead then pulled away blushing furiously.

"I'm sorry!" She whispered, mortified.

The Faunus chuckled and descended into a coughing fit "Don't... Worry... About... It" he managed to say between coughs.

How is your ankle? The Faunus asked concerned. Velvet was surprised by the amount of concern that he had in his voice.

She lifted her leg up and gently moved her sore ankle around. "It will be fine", velvet said softly, "it will be sore tomorrow, but it is okay for now."

"What is your name?" He managed to ask, once the coughing eased.

"Velvet, Velvet Scarlantia." She responded shyly.

"Nice name, I'm Nero, Nero Bostaur."

"Nice to meet you Nero."

"Likewise."

"Can you get up?" she queried.

"I think so" Nero answered.

Slowly, Nero eased himself up with velvet's help.

Taking a look around he winced at the amount of devastation he had caused. Trees near the impact zone had their bark stripped off and there was no foliage remaining  immediately around the boarbatusk's body.

Walking over to the body, Nero placed a foot on the boarbatusk and levered his maul out of the boarbatusk. Pressing the same button the spike was reduced back to its normal size.

Nero returned to velvet, "Ready to go?" He asked.

"You want to travel together?" Velvet asked surprised.

Nero cocked his head and raised an eyebrow "Do you really want to run in to one of those things by yourself?", he asked smiling, already knowing the answer.

Velvet managed a small smile "Alright, we'll travel together".

"Good!", Nero said pleased as he replaced his maul in its sling on his back, "let's go then!"

Nero started walking a few feet in the direction he assumed was north before velvet piped in.

"Uh...Nero? Thats the wrong way, you're heading south..."

Nero performed an instant 180 and walked back past Velvet, winking as he did so. Velvet couldn't help but giggle in spite of herself.

Together they walked North towards the Forest Temple, like so many other initiates. From that day Nero and velvet were the best of friends.

And there you go :)

Hello, this is my first fan fiction attempt of writing.
Any feedback would be really good :)
So this takes place in Volume 1 of RWBY in the Emerald Forest with the initiation challenge. It follows Velvet and my take on her powers and a new Faunus which I came up with :)
Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think :D
P.s. No adult content for this one, maybe the next one :)
